The Most Common Driving Hazards and How to Avoid Them

Increased traffic, dangerous driving behaviors, and the use of technology can all lead to accidents.  We want you to have a safe and enjoyable journey as you travel, so here are some of the most common driving hazards, and how to them.

Technology - Do not use any hand held devices while driving.

Construction - Avoid known work zones if possible, or anticipate the delay and allow extra time.  Follow signs and instructions, merge early before entering the work zone. Expect the unexpected; slow down, and be a courteous driver.

Animals – Pay attention when driving where animals may cross the road.  Be especially alert during times when animals are traveling (September – December).

Reckless Drivers – Keep your distance, slow down, and let the situation pass.

Flooded Waters - Flooded roads should be avoided at all costs. When in doubt, do not attempt to cross a flooded road or causeway.

Weather - Slow down to a safe speed that goes with the flow of traffic.  Maintain more distance between your vehicle and the one in front.

Fog - Keep your lights dim and slow down.

Motorcycles – Motorcycles have the same rights as every other driver. Most motorcycle accidents occur because of a blind spot issue, so always check your side mirror while driving.
